Hi-five to flying airplanes

For the past six weeks I’ve been working on getting my private pilots license over at Freemont County Airport near Canyon City, CO. We’re flying a 1970’s Cessna 172. My instructor is Mike Dulaney, former Sheriff in Jackson Hole, WY. With over 4000 hours of flight time, Mike is an amazing instructor. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable, but because he’s an older gentleman, he has the patience to put up with all my f-ups in flight! So thanks to Mike for working with me and helping me achieve a life long dream.

Flying is quite an expensive hobby, and for me that’s just what it is. I have zero intentions of flying commercially. I really just want to take my friends and family up with me, and my 90lb Rottweiler Tangerine of course. As a freelance designer/artist, I don’t really make that much money. Any knows as a freelancer, some months are good, some months are really really bad. The difference is I spend my money wisely and I figure out how to make it work. I didn’t have $8500 laying around to spend on a pilots license, so I pay as I go. I fly one to two times per week, depending on the weather. At $140 per hour for the plane and instructor, flying three hours per week adds up really quick.

My fiance and I are currently in the market of purchasing a home. I made it crystal clear that I’ll start saving for a down payment on a house as soon as this license is done. Priorities ya know! I mentioned that buying a plane and a hanger was cheaper than a $250K home, but she didn’t go for it. Oh well, I tried.

With that said I want to address the importance of seeing your dreams through. Not just to boost your confidence having accomplished a goal, but that feeling you get from a truly genuine smile of pure happiness. It makes all the hard work and effort worth it. So if you want something in life, don’t make an excuse, don’t wait until the perfect moment when everything falls into place. Because it never will.

JUST FUCKING DO IT

Making some breakfast signs

Making some Hi-five to breakfast signs! 10″x5″ max metal with black vinyl and rounded corners. This is all scrap metal from a local sign shop. Just had to pay for the vinyl. About $1.65 per sign.

Hi-five to breakfast

Since we got such a late start on this project last month, we didn’t really get as much done as would have liked to with the Hi-five to spring, oh well, moving on to May. This month our theme is Hi-five to breakfast! So I’ve put together a bunch of cool little signs to promote my favorite meal of the day. But to my sister and I, breakfast is more than just cramming your face full of pancakes and orange juice. When I think of breakfast, or pancakes for that matter, I think of my childhood and going to visit my dad on the weekends. I always enjoyed Saturday mornings because he’d make us a 10″ thick stack of pancakes and he always made sure to warm up the syrup (key for a successful bite). Watching the butter melt as you spread it over the warm pancakes and always dousing it with way more syrup than you needed. My mom made some pretty darn good pancakes, but my dad was just the king when it came to preparing a hearty breakfast.

My dad always used Bisquick, however today, I’m an Aunt Jemima fan. Always use milk, never water, and be sure to add in some vanilla, a touch of sugar, and keep the batter thin. That’ll keep the pancakes nice and moist.

Today I made some 10″x5″ signs out of max metal and black vinyl. I rounded the corners off as well. My friend and fellow designer Phil owns a little sign shop here in Colorado Springs called Two Moon Innovations. I went through all his scrap max metal, not just to save money but to also reduce waste. I knew that most of that scrap was going to sit around forever or get tossed out. I was going to be making quite a few of these signs so it was important to keep my cost down. Weeding vinyl always sucks, especially when you’re dealing with tiny details. The smaller lettering on these is 1/4″ tall, so quite the headache at times. So I made some cool signs, reused some old shit, and made use of my skill set. Pretty successful day. Just gotta go stick these up around town!

Springtime is here and the trees are in bloom. Today we celebrate spring and the world around us coming to life. Our love for the Colorado snowfall is a wonderful experience, but seeing the trees in our neighborhood blossom in the springtime is truly magnificent. This morning I took my Rottweiler “Tangerine” or a walk around the neighborhood, snapped a few photos along the way. These blossoming trees and flowers bring us not only beauty, but clean air and a welcoming environment. To me they also bring a since of peace and serenity.

Today I encourage you to take a second out of your busy day. Maybe go for a walk, have a look around and stop to enjoy the beauty of springtime around you. Feel free to snap a photo to capture the moment if you like.

Hi-five to the Simple Life

Today is the first day of our project “Hi-five to the Simple Life”. My sister Ashleigh and were doing some brainstorming this afternoon with our trusty No. 2 pencil, our Field Notes, and a home made latte of course (made from New Mexico Pinon Coffee beans, courtesy of Costco, mmm). It’s got a bit of a nutty flavor to it, good stuff. At the moment we’re just doing all the ground work and putting together a simple plan of action. We’re thinking about social media platforms, and how to make the most out of them. We’re not big on social media. Personally I don’t have any social media as I didn’t really grow up with it so it just doesn’t really appeal to me. Plus I’d rather go out with my friends for a cup-o-joe or a cold beer if I want to find out how their day went. Real life interactions, what a crazy concept… However, we do understand the importance of social media in regards to opening up communication and promoting our project outside of our local community. Anyways, so yeah, we’re just doing all the leg work at the moment, writing down our ideas and putting this plan into action. It’s a beautiful thing to take those ideas in your head and put them on paper, that’s when they become real. Otherwise they’re just running loose in your head, waiting for the day they get the f**k out.

Each month we’re going to have a theme. And each month we’re going to be putting up art around town that promotes that theme as well as blogging about what that theme means to us in our personal lives. Like Hi-five to coffee. Sitting on the couch with my 90lb Rottweiler, enjoying a hot cup-o-joe, and just enjoying the quiet downtime. To me that’s a simple joy in life that brings me true happiness. So you get the point. Look for our artwork around town (Colorado Springs). We’re hoping to grow this simple idea beyond our own backyard so if you’d like to get involved and start impacting your local community we’d love to have you on board. Give us a ring or shoot us an email to get involved. (719) 210-8384 or me(at)hi-fivedesign.com
